KaiWise is a food scanning app designed to cut through food confusion.
Built for everyday shoppers, it turns complex food labels into a clear colour coded traffic light system. Instead of decoding long ingredient lists or marketing claims, users get instant guidance they can act on in the supermarket.
The app supports families, health conscious individuals, & people with specific dietary needs by making nutrition information simple, trustworthy, & practical.
KaiWise was founded by nutrition educator Peter Bird after his own health journey showed him how powerful better food choices can be.
He recognised a widespread problem. Food labels are overwhelming. Ingredient lists are confusing. Most people do not have time to research additives while standing in the aisle.
KaiWise was created to bridge that gap by combining credible nutritional science with everyday usability.
Within just three months of launch, KaiWise surpassed 18,000+ downloads across New Zealand & Australia.
Early users consistently praise:
The most common feedback is simple.
“It makes shopping easier.”
This rapid adoption confirms a clear market need. People want food transparency. They just want it delivered simply.
KaiWise partnered with UpShift to turn a strong health mission into a scalable digital product.
Our role included:
The guiding principle was simplicity. If the app was not simple enough to use mid shop, it would not work.
KaiWise enables users to:
The comparison feature allows users to quickly see which option is the better choice, removing guesswork in the aisle.
Personalisation adds another layer of value. Users can tailor the app to their dietary preferences, health priorities, or specific needs. This ensures ratings are not just generic, but relevant to the individual.
The product balances clarity with depth. Users see a simple outcome first, then can explore the reasoning behind the rating if they choose.
KaiWise also incorporates advanced nutritional analysis to support blood sugar awareness.
This focus is personal to UpShift founder Tama Easton, whose son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age three. Combined with UpShift’s involvement in Stanford’s DiabetesWise initiative, this brought lived experience & technical insight into the product.
KaiWise:
This functionality supports people living with diabetes, as well as parents, athletes, & those focused on energy & metabolic health.
KaiWise is more than a food scanner.
It combines:
By prioritising simplicity over complexity, KaiWise helps everyday people make better food choices without needing a nutrition degree.
